Wisdom Teeth Removal for Chino, CA: Timing It So Nobody Misses Much School
The most common question we get from Chino Valley Unified parents isn't about the surgery. It's about the calendar: can we do this over winter break? Spring break? The week after finals? Usually, yes — and planning it that way is smart, because recovery from a routine wisdom teeth removal is a few days of real downtime, and those days are easier to give up when there's no school.
So this page is organized around timing. The surgeon is Dr. Sean Moghadam, board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the office is in Pomona, straight up SR-71 from Chino.
The Windows Chino Families Use
• Winter break — the most popular. Book the consultation in October or November so there's room to schedule the surgery in the first days of break and be fully back by January.
• Spring break — one week is enough for a typical four-tooth case. Consultation in February.
• The week after school ends — the longest runway. Consultation in April or May.
• Thursday or Friday during the semester — for a single tooth or a simple case, a long weekend covers it. Recovery from one erupted tooth is often a day or two.
The consultation itself takes about an hour and is free. Surgery is a separate appointment. Booking the consultation early is what makes the break-week surgery slot possible; the slots fill.
When It Shouldn't Wait for a Break
Some things move the timeline up: pain that keeps returning, swelling behind the last molar, a bad taste or drainage in that area, or an X-ray showing a tooth pressing into the neighboring molar. Dr. Moghadam will tell you plainly if your child's case is one of those. He won't tell you to wait for convenience when there's an active problem.
What It Costs
Self-pay:
• $300 per wisdom tooth
• $1,200 flat fee for IV sedation or general anesthesia — the same fee for one tooth or four
Four teeth under IV sedation is $2,400. You know the number before booking, which also makes it easier to plan the timing around your own budget, not just the school calendar.
Insurance: Medi-Cal Dental, IEHP, and PPO plans are accepted. Our office verifies your coverage for the extraction and the sedation before the appointment.
Paying over time: zero-interest in-house financing, CareCredit, and a 5% discount for paying in full in cash — which stacks with CareCredit.
What the Break Week Actually Looks Like
For a typical four-tooth removal under IV sedation:
• Surgery day: groggy from the sedation for a few hours. A parent drives home. Gauze, rest, cold compress, soft food.
• Days 1–3: peak swelling and soreness. Pain management as directed, soft foods, gentle rinsing per the written instructions.
• Days 3–5: swelling comes down. Most teens are up and around, on the couch rather than in bed.
• Day 7 and after: eating normally for most patients. Sports and heavy exertion usually resume around two weeks, depending on the case.
A one-week break covers all of that comfortably. A deeply impacted case recovers a little slower; an erupted, simple case faster. You'll get instructions specific to your child's procedure, and a direct line to the office for anything that doesn't seem right.
Who's Doing the Surgery
Dr. Sean Moghadam, on every case. He graduated with honors from UCLA, completed a General Practice Residency at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, a surgical internship and clinical instructor role at The Ohio State University, and his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He's board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery. There is no associate or rotating surgeon.
Sedation, In-Office
Nitrous oxide and IV sedation, and general anesthesia are all administered here in Pomona — no hospital or surgery center trip. Four impacted teeth almost always means IV sedation: the patient is asleep and remembers none of it. A single erupted tooth may need only local anesthetic. Dr. Moghadam matches the sedation to the case, and an anxious patient can have sedation for a procedure that wouldn't strictly need it.
Does It Need to Come Out at All?
Not always. Dr. Moghadam reads the panoramic X-ray tooth by tooth. Impacted, infected, decayed, or pressing into the second molar — remove. Erupted straight with room to clean — leave it and re-check next year. Some Chino teens leave the consultation with "remove two, watch two," or "nothing yet." A first evaluation at 13 or 14 is what makes the planned-timing approach possible; the roots are still forming, which makes an eventual extraction simpler.
Oral Surgeon vs. General Dentist for Wisdom Teeth
Most of the Chino offices that rank for "wisdom teeth removal" are general dental practices. Many general dentists remove erupted wisdom teeth competently. The difference shows with impacted teeth, teeth close to the nerve, and anything under IV sedation or general anesthesia: an oral and maxillofacial surgeon completes a four-to-six-year hospital-based residency after dental school, trains in anesthesia, and handles the cases general dentists refer out. Dr. Moghadam is board-certified in that specialty, and the sedation is administered by him in our office.
Dry Socket: What It Is and How to Avoid It
The complication parents ask about most. After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and protects the bone underneath. If it's dislodged — by a straw, smoking or vaping, vigorous rinsing, or poking at it — the bone is exposed and it hurts, usually starting around day three. It's treatable (a medicated dressing, a quick visit), but it's better avoided: no straws, no smoking or vaping, gentle rinsing only, soft food, for the first several days. Lower wisdom teeth carry more risk than upper. The written instructions you'll get cover this; following them is most of the prevention.
Extractions That Aren't Wisdom Teeth
Teeth that can't be predictably restored, teeth that have failed a root canal, and teeth removed to make room for orthodontic treatment — same surgeon, same timing conversation, firm quote at the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should we book to get a winter-break surgery date?
Consultation in October or November. The break-week surgery slots fill, and the consultation has to come first.
Is a one-week break enough for four wisdom teeth?
For a typical case, yes. Peak soreness is days 1–3, most teens are up by day 4 or 5, and eating normally by about a week. Deeply impacted teeth can run a bit longer.
How much pain is normal after wisdom teeth removal?
Soreness that peaks on day two or three and then steadily eases is normal, as is some jaw stiffness. Pain that gets worse after day three, or throbbing that spreads toward the ear, is not; that can be dry socket, which is quick to treat. Call us rather than waiting.
What if my teen's tooth is bothering them now — do we still wait for a break?
No. Recurring pain, swelling, or drainage means book the consultation now. Dr. Moghadam will tell you whether it can safely wait.
What does it cost without insurance?
$300 per wisdom tooth plus one $1,200 fee if IV sedation or general anesthesia is used. Four teeth with sedation is $2,400.
Do you take Medi-Cal or IEHP?
Yes — Medi-Cal Dental, IEHP, and PPO. Coverage for the extraction and sedation is verified before your visit.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. Exam and X-rays, no charge. You leave knowing which teeth, if any, need to come out, and the price.
Should wisdom teeth be removed before or after braces?
Usually neither is required. Wisdom teeth don't need to come out to start braces, and braces don't require removal afterward. We check wisdom teeth on the same X-rays used for orthodontic planning, and if removal is needed it's timed around treatment, often after braces come off.
What's dry socket, and how likely is it?
The protective clot in the socket comes loose, exposing bone — painful, usually around day three. It's more common with lower teeth and with straws, smoking, or vaping. Following the post-op instructions prevents most cases; if it happens, it's a quick visit and a medicated dressing.
Should a general dentist or an oral surgeon remove my teen's wisdom teeth?
For erupted, simple teeth, many general dentists do fine. For impacted teeth, teeth near the nerve, or anything under IV sedation, an oral surgeon is trained specifically for it. Dr. Moghadam is board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
At what age should wisdom teeth be evaluated?
Around 13 or 14. It's a look at the X-ray, not a surgery date — many kids evaluated then don't have anything done for years.
Do you speak Spanish?
Sí. Se habla español en nuestra oficina.
