Wisdom teeth evaluation and removal for teens and adults.

Having wisdom teeth does not automatically mean they need to be removed. An evaluation combines your symptoms, dental and medical history, an examination and appropriate imaging to help determine whether removal or continued monitoring is appropriate. At Kids Dental Castle & Orthodontics in Pomona, that's Dr. Sean Moghadam, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The consultation, exam, and X-ray are free, and you leave knowing which teeth need to come out, what it costs, and when to schedule it. Se habla español.

Planning Care for Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth vary in their position, root development, and proximity to nearby nerves, sinuses and teeth. An evaluation considers these factors, the risks and alternatives, and your individual needs. Your consultation is also an opportunity to discuss whether removal is appropriate now or whether continued monitoring is an option.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Actually Need to Come Out?

Not always. Dr. Moghadam reads the panoramic X-ray tooth by tooth and sorts each one into three groups:

  • Remove now — impacted, infected, decayed, or pressing into the second molar; recurring pain or swelling; a cyst forming around the crown.
  • Remove at a planned time — angled but not yet causing problems, where waiting means a harder extraction later. These get scheduled around school or work rather than rushed.
  • Leave and re-check — erupted straight, fully functional, reachable with a toothbrush, and not harming anything around them.

Plenty of patients leave this office told to remove two and watch two, or to do nothing at all this year. A recommendation to remove all four is a finding, not a default.

What Is an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that can't erupt into a normal position — blocked by bone, by gum tissue, or by the molar in front of it. Impaction comes in degrees: some teeth are fully buried in bone, some are partially through the gum with a flap of tissue over them, and some are tilted forward against the second molar.

Partially erupted wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean and may be associated with inflammation or infection. The gum flap traps food and bacteria in a space no toothbrush reaches, which leads to repeated inflammation, bad taste, and eventually infection. A fully buried tooth can sit quietly for years, or it can form a cyst that damages the bone and the neighboring roots — which is why they're monitored on X-rays rather than ignored.

Signs You Should Have Your Wisdom Teeth Checked

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the mouth, especially recurring episodes
  • Tender, swollen, or bleeding gums behind the last molar
  • Jaw swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • A persistent bad taste or bad breath that brushing doesn't fix
  • Food trapping behind the last molar

Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no symptoms at all and are found on a routine X-ray. That's the usual way they're discovered, and it's the best time to plan.

Wisdom Teeth Removal for Teens

Most wisdom teeth patients here are teenagers and young adults, and there's a reason surgeons prefer that window. In the mid-teens the roots of the third molars are still forming, the bone is less dense, and healing is faster. The complexity of removal and recovery varies with tooth position, root development, health and other individual factors.

For teens already in braces or Invisalign with our orthodontist, the wisdom teeth conversation happens in the same building, with the same records. Existing X-rays can be reviewed, and additional imaging may be recommended when clinically needed.

What Age Should Wisdom Teeth Be Checked?

Wisdom-tooth development can be assessed during the teen years. The timing of an evaluation and any imaging depends on dental development, symptoms, examination findings and existing X-rays. An evaluation does not automatically mean removal is needed.

Sedation & Anesthesia for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your anesthesia plan depends on the procedure, your medical history and individual needs. Before treatment, Dr. Moghadam explains the recommended approach, monitoring, preparation and recovery instructions. Follow the instructions provided specifically for you. Discharge timing depends on recovery and clinical assessment.

Does Medi-Cal Cover Wisdom Teeth Removal?

We accept Medi-Cal Dental and most major PPO dental plans. For patients enrolled in IEHP Medi-Cal, dental benefits are provided through Medi-Cal Dental. Our team checks eligibility, benefits and any required authorization, and explains estimated patient costs before treatment. Coverage depends on your individual plan.

How Much Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Cost in Pomona?

Discuss your treatment plan and expected costs before scheduling treatment.  Ours is simple: $300 per wisdom tooth, and a flat $1,200 for IV anesthesia whether it's one tooth or four. Four wisdom teeth with IV anesthesia is $2,400, and you know that before you call. The consultation, exam, and panoramic X-ray are free, and you leave with the written price for your specific case.

Your total depends on the number of teeth removed and whether IV anesthesia is used. Any additional recommended services and their costs will be discussed before treatment. A CBCT scan, if needed, is performed and billed separately by an outside provider. Insurance, when it applies, is billed first. CareCredit is accepted. We offer 5% off your agreed treatment fee when you pay in full with cash or a personal credit card. CareCredit payments do not qualify for this discount. Eligible HSA and FSA payments are accepted too.

PPO plans usually cover a percentage of extractions and, for impacted teeth, part of the sedation fee. We verify your benefit before scheduling so there are no surprises.

What Happens at a Wisdom Teeth Consultation?

The first visit answers one question: do these wisdom teeth need treatment, and if so, what does that treatment involve?

Dr. Moghadam reviews your symptoms and medical history, examines the gums and surrounding teeth, takes a panoramic X-ray, and assesses the position of each third molar, how developed the roots are, whether any tooth is impacted, and whether neighboring teeth or tissues are being affected.

If removal is recommended, you'll hear which teeth and why, what the procedure involves, the sedation options, what to do the day before, what recovery looks like, and the cost with your insurance applied. In writing. The consultation is free whether you schedule surgery or not.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Does everyone need their wisdom teeth removed?

No. If the wisdom teeth have erupted normally, are healthy, functional, painless, easy to keep clean, and aren't harming surrounding tissues, they may be monitored instead of removed.

  • How much does wisdom teeth removal cost here?

Wisdom-tooth removal is $300 per tooth, including impacted teeth. In-office IV anesthesia is a flat $1,200 for removal of one to four wisdom teeth, so four wisdom teeth with IV anesthesia cost $2,400. The consultation, examination and panoramic X-ray are free. If a CBCT scan is needed, an outside provider performs it and bills you separately. Routine postoperative checks and follow-up care for complications related to your treatment are included. Your benefits, expected patient responsibility and any additional recommended costs are discussed before treatment.

  • What are the symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth?

Pain or pressure at the back of the mouth, tender or swollen gums, jaw swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, bad taste, recurrent inflammation, or trouble keeping the area clean. Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no symptoms and are found on dental X-rays.

  • Can you remove all four wisdom teeth at once?

Often, yes. Whether multiple teeth come out in the same procedure depends on their position, your medical history, and the surgical plan — discussed at the consultation.

  • Do you offer IV sedation for wisdom teeth removal?

Yes. IV sedation and general anesthesia are available and administered in our Pomona office by Dr. Moghadam.

  • Does Medi-Cal cover wisdom teeth removal?

Medi-Cal Dental may cover medically necessary wisdom-tooth extractions when coverage requirements are met. We verify benefits and handle authorization before treatment.

  • Does Medi-Cal cover sedation for wisdom teeth?

Sedation or anesthesia may be covered when clinically necessary. Coverage and authorization requirements depend on the case, and we check before scheduling.

  • When should wisdom teeth be evaluated?

Wisdom-tooth development can be assessed during the teen years. The timing of an evaluation and any imaging depends on dental development, symptoms, examination findings and existing X-rays. An evaluation does not automatically mean removal is needed.

  • How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies with the number and position of the teeth removed, the complexity of the procedure and individual health. Follow your surgeon's instructions for eating, cleaning your mouth, medications and returning to school, work or exercise. Contact your surgical team if you have concerns about your recovery.

  • Can I get wisdom teeth removed if I don't normally go to your dental office?

Yes. You do not need to be an existing pediatric dentistry or orthodontic patient to schedule a wisdom teeth consultation.

  • Do you treat adults for wisdom teeth removal?

Yes. We see many teenagers and young adults, and our oral surgery services are available to adult patients as well.
