Orthodontist, or a General Dentist Who Offers Braces?

After four years of dental school, an orthodontist spends another two to three years in a residency accredited for the specialty, working on nothing but tooth movement, jaw growth and bite correction. It is a full-time program with its own admissions, and it is the only route into the specialty. A minority ever go through it.
A general dentist may legally provide orthodontic treatment in California. Plenty take continuing-education courses in aligners or short-term braces and do genuinely good work. Mild crowding on an adult with a settled bite is often a straightforward job, and a dentist who has finished a hundred of those may handle yours perfectly well. That's a real option and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
What isn't acceptable is not being told which one you're getting.
The gap widens where the case gets harder — most of all with a growing child. When the jaws are still developing and permanent teeth are still arriving, the difficulty isn't the appliance, it's the diagnosis and the sequencing: reading a growth pattern, deciding whether to act now or wait two years, recognizing when a crossbite is skeletal rather than a tilted tooth. That judgment is what the residency builds. A bracket is a bracket; the plan behind it is what you're actually buying.
Three Questions to Ask Any Office — Including Ours
Take these to every consultation on your list. They take fifteen seconds and they sort the field faster than any website will.
1. Who will plan my case? Not "our team." A name. Then ask what that person's training is.
2. Who will I see at each adjustment? Braces mean a dozen to two dozen appointments over two years. At some offices the doctor appears at the start and at the debond, and the visits between are run by staff. That can be fine. You should know before you sign.
3. Is that person a specialist, and are they board-certified? Both answers are checkable: California licenses are public record, and the American Board of Orthodontics publishes its diplomates by name. An office that gets cagey about a straight question has told you something.

Braces or Invisalign
Short version, because the decision is usually simpler than the internet makes it.
Braces are bonded to the teeth and keep working whether anyone is motivated or not. They're more predictable on large rotations, real bite correction and impacted teeth, and they're the right call for a middle-schooler who would lose an aligner tray by the second Tuesday.
Invisalign is removable, which is both its advantage and its only real risk: twenty to twenty-two hours a day or the plan slips. For a Damien High junior with a wind-instrument mouthpiece, or a Bonita High athlete who'd rather not have brackets under a mouthguard, removable is genuinely better. For a distracted twelve-year-old, usually not.

Medi-Cal and Orthodontics
La Verne is in Los Angeles County, and we accept Medi-Cal Dental.
Medi-Cal covers braces only for cases that meet the state's medical-necessity criteria — a scored assessment of the malocclusion, not a judgment call at a front desk. Severe crowding, large overjet, crossbites, impacted teeth and cleft-related cases tend to score. Alignment for appearance alone does not. Medi-Cal never covers Invisalign, at any age, in any case.

About ten minutes, door to door, from most of town. From the 210, head east and come south at Towne Avenue — that drops you into north Pomona a few blocks from us. From the hillside streets above Foothill Boulevard, Foothill east then south. From the south end near Arrow Highway and White Avenue you're already most of the way. Coming off the 57, pick up the 210 east rather than fighting surface streets.
Visit frequency is lighter than most families expect. A braces adjustment takes about half an hour, roughly every seven weeks; Invisalign check-ins run every two to three months with trays changed at home. Frequently Asked Questions
Do braces hurt?
Getting braces put on doesn't hurt. Teeth are sore for a few days afterward and for a day or two after each adjustment: enough to prefer soft food, not enough to miss school. Over-the-counter pain relief, and wax for any bracket that rubs, handle it for most patients.
Is Invisalign or braces better for a teenager?
It depends on the teen more than the teeth. Braces work around the clock with no cooperation needed. Invisalign works as well for many cases, but only if the aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Dr. Tran will tell you which fits your teen's case and habits.
Does dental insurance cover braces?
Many PPO plans include an orthodontic benefit, usually a one-time lifetime maximum per person, commonly $1,000 to $2,000, and many cover children only. We check your plan before the consultation and show the covered amount on your written estimate.
What does board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics mean?
It's a voluntary step beyond the residency: the orthodontist submits completed cases and is examined by a panel of peers. Most orthodontists never do it. Dr. Tran has.
