Braces and Invisalign for Diamond Bar Teens — Built Around a School Year That’s Already Full

Diamond Bar parents don’t usually ask us whether their teenager needs braces. The dentist already said so, or the teen already asked. What they ask is how it fits: around AP classes, finals, club sports, band, SAT weekends, and a schedule that was full before orthodontics showed up.

So this page is organized around that. Every case is planned and treated by Dr. Lyndon Tran, a board-certified orthodontist — not a general dentist offering aligners on the side, which is what most of the offices on Diamond Bar Boulevard and Golden Springs are. Our office is in Pomona, a short run up the 57 or 60. The consultation is free. Se habla español.

The Appointment Load, Honestly

Two years of orthodontics is fewer visits than most families expect:

• Braces: one placement visit (60–90 minutes), then an adjustment every 6–8 weeks (20–30 minutes). That’s roughly 12–16 short visits over 24 months — about one per grading period. Then removal, then a couple of retainer checks.

• Invisalign: one start visit, then a check-in every 8–12 weeks. Aligners are changed at home. About 8–10 visits over two years.

We hold after-school slots for Walnut Valley Unified and Pomona Unified families, and adjustment visits are short enough to fit between school and practice. Nothing about treatment requires missing class.

Braces vs. Invisalign for a Busy Teen

The honest variable isn’t which one looks better. It’s compliance. Invisalign only works if the aligners are in 20–22 hours a day — through lunch, through practice, through a six-hour SAT. A teen who’ll manage that gets the convenience: aligners come out for eating, brushing, sports, and instruments. Teen aligners have a small wear indicator that fades with use, so parents can tell.

A teen who’d rather not think about it is often better served by braces, which work regardless of discipline. Neither is "better." Dr. Tran recommends per case, based on what needs to move and what will actually get worn.

Comprehensive braces: about $3,500. Comprehensive Invisalign: about $4,000. Complex cases: up to about $4,500. Both typically 24 months.

Sports, Band, and the Things Teens Actually Worry About

• Contact sports (football, basketball, soccer, water polo): braces are fine with an orthodontic mouthguard, which fits over brackets. Invisalign comes out and a regular mouthguard goes in.

• Band and orchestra: brass and woodwind players in braces adjust their embouchure within a couple of weeks; wax helps early. Invisalign comes out to play.

• Photos, prom, senior portraits: Invisalign is invisible in photos. Braces are visible but temporary; clear brackets are an option.

• Broken bracket the night before a tournament: call us. Repairs are short visits, usually within a day or two, and a loose bracket isn’t an emergency in the meantime — wax over it.

• Lost aligner: wear the previous set and call. A replacement is ordered; treatment doesn’t restart.

Timing the Start

There’s no perfect month, but there are better ones. Starting in early summer means the first adjustment period — the sore, learning-to-eat week — happens before school. Starting in the fall means removal lands around the summer before senior year, which is when a lot of families want it. Starting in spring works fine too; the point is that the start date is a planning conversation, and the free consultation is where it happens. A written price and timeline come with it.

What It Costs, Month by Month

Zero-interest in-house financing, no lender:

• Comprehensive braces ($3,500): $300 down, about $133/month for 24 months

• Comprehensive Invisalign ($4,000): $500 down, about $146/month for 24 months

• Phase One (younger kids, $3,000): $300 down, about $150/month for 18 months

• Invisalign First (younger kids, $3,500): $500 down, about $167/month for 18 months

CareCredit is accepted. Paying in full in cash earns 5% off, and the discount stacks with CareCredit.

Insurance: PPO orthodontic benefits usually cover a portion, often as a lifetime maximum; we verify before your visit, including Walnut Valley USD and Pomona USD employee plans. Medi-Cal Dental covers braces for medically necessary cases (not Invisalign). Diamond Bar is in LA County, so Medi-Cal Dental works directly rather than through IEHP.

Younger Siblings: The Age-7 Look

If there’s a younger child in the house, an orthodontic evaluation around age 7 is the standard recommendation — free here, and most kids that age leave with "nothing yet, check again next year." For the few who benefit from early treatment (a crossbite, severe crowding, a jaw-growth pattern), you’ll hear specifically why. We don’t recommend Phase One as a default.

Adults From Diamond Bar

Parents sometimes start after watching a teen go through it. No age limit; healthy gums are the requirement. Same prices, same plans. Adult cases are usually Invisalign.

Meet Dr. Lyndon Tran

Dr. Tran is board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. He attended dental school at New York University, where he was recognized as a top student in the orthodontic honors program, and completed his orthodontic residency at NYU. He plans and manages every case here himself.

Orthodontist or General Dentist?

Most Diamond Bar offices advertising Invisalign are general dental practices. A general dentist can legally provide aligners; an orthodontist has completed two to three additional years of residency in tooth movement and jaw growth, and a board-certified one has passed the American Board of Orthodontics’ examination as well. For a teenager whose jaw is still growing, that specialization is the difference between moving teeth and planning a bite.

  • How many school days will my teen miss for braces?

Effectively none. Adjustment visits are 20–30 minutes every 6–8 weeks, and we schedule after school. The placement visit is the only long one, and it can be a Saturday or a break day.

  • Can my teen do Invisalign and still play water polo / football / soccer?

Yes. Aligners come out for practice and games; a regular mouthguard goes in. With braces, an orthodontic mouthguard fits over the brackets.

  • Can you play a wind instrument with braces?

Yes. Brass and woodwind players usually need one to two weeks to adjust after braces go on, and wax on the brackets helps. Invisalign aligners can be taken out for practice and performances.

  • When's the best time of year to start?

Early summer puts the adjustment week before school; fall puts removal around the summer before senior year. Either works — it's a planning conversation at the free consultation.

  • Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?

About $500 more here — $4,000 vs. $3,500 for comprehensive treatment. Not double.

  • What are the monthly payments?

About $133/month for braces or $146/month for Invisalign, for 24 months, after a $300 or $500 down payment, at 0% interest.

  • Does my PPO cover it?

Most PPO orthodontic benefits cover a portion, often as a lifetime maximum. We verify your plan — including district employee plans — before your visit.

  • Does Medi-Cal cover braces?

For medically necessary cases, yes. Not Invisalign. Diamond Bar is LA County, so it runs directly through Medi-Cal Dental.

  • What if a bracket breaks right before a game?

Wax over it, and call us. Repairs are short visits within a day or two. A loose bracket isn't dangerous in the meantime.

  • Do braces or Invisalign affect speech?

Braces rarely do. Invisalign can cause a slight lisp for the first few days of each new set, which fades as the tongue adjusts. Retainers can do the same briefly.

  • Is the consultation free?

Yes. Exam, digital scan, and X-rays. You leave with a written price and timeline.

  • Do you speak Spanish?

Sí. Se habla español en nuestra oficina.
