Front-desk team verifying Medi-Cal dental coverage for a Montclair, CA oral surgery patient

Oral Surgery & Wisdom Teeth Removal for Montclair, CA — Medi-Cal, IEHP, and Self-Pay

For a lot of Montclair families, the first question about oral surgery isn't "which surgeon" — it's "will my plan cover this, and if not, what does it cost?" So this page starts there. The surgeon, the sedation, and the directions follow.

Our office is in Pomona, just over Montclair's western border — a few minutes up Holt or the 10. The surgeon on every case is Dr. Sean Moghadam, board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

If You're on Medi-Cal or IEHP

We accept Medi-Cal Dental and IEHP. Both cover many extractions, including wisdom teeth, when they're medically necessary — impacted, infected, decayed, or causing problems for the neighboring teeth. Coverage for sedation depends on the plan and the case.

What we do so there are no surprises: before your appointment, our front office verifies your specific benefits for the extraction and for sedation, and tells you what, if anything, you'd owe. You'll know before you sit in the chair, not after.

If a tooth needs to come out but the plan doesn't cover the sedation you'd prefer, we'll tell you the self-pay sedation fee below so you can decide.

If You Have PPO Insurance

We accept PPO plans. The same benefit check happens before your visit. Most PPOs cover extractions at a set percentage after the deductible; we'll tell you the estimated out-of-pocket up front.

If You're Paying Yourself

  • $300 per wisdom tooth
  • $1,200 flat fee for IV sedation or general anesthesia — the same fee for one tooth or four

Four wisdom teeth under IV sedation is $2,400. Any other extraction is quoted, in writing, at the consultation.

Making it manageable: zero-interest in-house financing (no added cost to spread it out), CareCredit, and a 5% discount for paying in full in cash — the discount stacks with CareCredit.

The Surgeon

Dr. Sean Moghadam graduated with honors from UCLA, completed a General Practice Residency at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, a surgical internship and clinical instructor role at The Ohio State University, and his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He's board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He performs every surgical case in this office — wisdom teeth, extractions, implants, bone grafting, jaw surgery — and doesn't hand cases to an associate.

What Actually Gets Removed

Not every wisdom tooth. Dr. Moghadam reads the panoramic X-ray and sorts each tooth into one of three: remove now (impacted, infected, decayed, pressing on the second molar), remove at a planned time (angled but not yet a problem — often scheduled for a school break), or leave it and re-check next year. For Ontario-Montclair and Chaffey students, a first look in the early teens is what makes the "planned time" option possible.

Beyond wisdom teeth: teeth that can't be predictably restored, teeth that have failed a root canal, and teeth removed to make room for orthodontic treatment.

Sedation, and Getting Home Afterward

Three options, all in-office: nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and general anesthesia.

This matters for Montclair families who rely on the Transcenter or share one car: after IV sedation or general anesthesia, the patient needs someone to drive them home — no bus, no rideshare alone, no driving themselves. After nitrous oxide only, the effects wear off within minutes of the mask coming off, and an adult patient can usually leave on their own. Dr. Moghadam matches the sedation to the procedure, but if transportation is a real constraint, tell us at the consultation — for a simple extraction, local anesthetic plus nitrous is often enough and avoids the driver requirement.

One Building for the Whole Family

Pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and oral surgery are all here. A Montclair family with a teenager who needs wisdom teeth out and younger kids on Medi-Cal for cleanings and checkups can handle all of it through one front desk — one set of insurance paperwork, one place to call.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Medi-Cal cover wisdom teeth removal?

Often, yes, when the extraction is medically necessary — an impacted, infected, or decayed tooth, or one damaging the neighboring molar. Sedation coverage varies. We verify your specific Medi-Cal Dental benefits before your appointment and tell you what's covered.

  • Does IEHP cover oral surgery?

We accept IEHP, and it covers many medically necessary extractions. Like Medi-Cal, sedation coverage depends on the case. Our office confirms your benefits before you come in.

  • What if I have no insurance at all?

$300 for each wisdom tooth, and a single $1,200 fee if the case needs IV sedation or general anesthesia. Zero-interest financing and CareCredit are available, and paying in full in cash takes 5% off.

  • Can I drive myself home after wisdom teeth removal?

Not after IV sedation or general anesthesia. You'll need an adult to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day; a bus or rideshare alone isn't safe after sedation. With local anesthetic only, you can usually drive yourself.

  • How much is wisdom teeth removal with insurance?

It depends on the plan. PPO plans commonly pay a share of surgical extractions after the deductible. Medi-Cal Dental covers medically necessary extractions, typically with no out-of-pocket cost when requirements are met. We check your benefits before the appointment and give you your portion in writing.

  • My child's Medi-Cal dentist said the wisdom teeth should come out. Do we need a referral?

No formal referral is required. Call or book online, bring or have the dentist send any X-rays, and Dr. Moghadam evaluates from there.

  • What are the signs of infection after wisdom teeth removal?

Swelling that gets worse after the third day, fever, pus, a bad taste that won't rinse away, or pain that increases instead of easing. Any of these is a reason to call us the same day.

  • How long does numbness last after wisdom teeth removal?

The local anesthetic usually wears off within three to five hours. Avoid hot drinks and chewing until it does, so you don't bite your cheek or tongue. Numbness of the lip or tongue that lasts into the next day is uncommon; call us if it happens.
